ALASKA

Hello from the Last Frontier!

We are a 4th/5th grade class from Eagle River, Alaska, a little bit north of our state’s largest city, Anchorage.  It’s not the capital, though – Juneau is.  Alaska is the largest state in the USA, but we don’t have the most people.  In fact, we have more caribou (over a million) than people!  Other animals in our state are moose, bears, eagles, and wolves.  Our summer days are long, with close to 20 hours of daylight, but it rarely gets warmer than 70 degrees.  Winters are cold (below zero and LOTS of snow!) and dark.  Even though we get a lot of snow, we don’t live in igloos!  Alaska is a fun place to live.  We enjoy camping, fishing, berry picking, hockey, and skiing.  Our state sport is dogsled racing and the Iditarod is a famous race held every March.  Mt. McKinley, the second tallest mountain on Earth, is about 5 hours north of us, and the mountains near our school are covered with snow already.  We hope you learn a lot and enjoy all of your postcards! From your friends in Mrs. Romine’s Class
