Greetings from
Ocracoke Island, NC, the Tarheel State.
We live on a barrier island in
the Outer Banks. The only way to get to our island is by ferry or
airplane. Our town is very small, our houses are close together,
so we can walk or bike anywhere in town. Our PreK 12th
grade school is the smallest public school in NC. We do not need
school buses; everyone walks or bikes to school. Sometimes our
parents drive us to school. Because we do not have a cafeteria,
we go home for lunch or eat a homemade lunch at school. Some
schools have snow days, we dont, instead we have hurricane days!
Since we are part of the Cape
Hatteras National Seashore, we spend most of our time at the
beach. There are no buildings on our beaches at all. We
enjoy surfing, water skiing, tubing, boogie boarding, skimboarding,
swimming, kayaking, parasailing, fishing, crabbing, and clamming.
We also relish scavenging the beach for interesting objects that fall
off monstrous cargo ships. Tons of bananas, Doritos, onions, and
ceiling fans have washed up on our beaches!
Pepsi was invented here in NC
and so were Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. The Wright Brothers flew the
first plane in Kitty Hawk, NC. The first miniature golf course
was constructed in NC. Venus Flytrap plants grow in one small
swamp in our state, and it is the only place in the world where they
grow naturally.
We cant wait to see your
postcards!
