Getting to Know Groundhogs
Groundhogs are cool.  Groundhogs are rodents, similar to squirrels.  Their fur is brown and gray.  The groundhogs like to live in open country and the edges of woodland, in burrows.  The groundhog likes to eat berries, bugs, and grasses.  Other facts about groundhogs are that they hibernate, swim, climb trees, and they dig good.  Groundhogs can do amazing stuff.

Groundhogs
The groundhog is also known as a woodchuck and in the rodent family.  They have a short tail.  They are covered with two coats of fur.  Mostly groundhogs eat wild grasses and other vegetation, and berries.  Sometimes they will eat grubs, grasshoppers and other small animals.  Groundhogs are good burrowers which they use for sleeping, raising their young, and hibernating.  Groundhogs will build a separate winter burrow for hibernation.  They are good swimmers and climbers.  They climb trees to escape predators and look around.  Even though groundhogs are known as rodents, they play an important part in the celebration of groundhogs day!

Groundhogs
Groundhogs do not come out of its burrow on February 2nd to look for its shadow.  Shortly after leaving the burrow, male groundhogs fight to see who is the strongest.  After they know that then they find their mate.  The young are born 4 weeks after mating, although blind and hairless, they are very small.  The babies are ready for short trips outside the burrow within a month.  Adults are often found sunbathing atop of the mound, sitting upright on guard for other animals.  They stuff themselves with clover, alfalfa, and other plants to eat.
