ARIZONA

temple garden Christmas
Greetings from Longfellow School.  We live in Mesa, Arizona.  Most of us speak Spanish as our first language.  Mesa has the beautiful Arizona Temple (Mormon) which always does a huge Easter Pageant and a Christmas light display with over a half million lights.  Different churches have groups sing in the garden each night.  It is very warm (hot) here and we wear shorts to school most of the year.  We are third graders and have 25 students in our class.  Our school is Pre-K – 6th grade with 750 students.  We had over 1100 last year.  We love Mexican and Chinese food.  We like to play soccer, jump rope, and basketball at recess.  AZ is famous for the beautiful Grand Canyon and cactus.  We live in the desert.  The Super Bowl will be played here soon.  Please check the website for information about our state symbols:  http://www.azsos.gov/public_services/kids/kids_state_symbols_seal.htm  We are learning sign language with our teacher, Mrs. Garvin this year.

Howdy from Arizona, the Grand Canyon State!  We live in a small town in Southeastern Arizona called Safford.  The main industries here are copper, cotton, and prisons.  We don’t get much rain here, only about 7 inches a year, and it might snow every other year (if we’re lucky).  Our school is Lafe Nelson School with a student population of 510 and a staff population of 47.  We are fifth graders and there are 30 students in our classroom.  We have 3 class pets: a leopard gecko named Quincy; and two desert tortoises named Big and Little.  Safford has about 8,000 people, and there’s not a lot to do here in town, but around Safford, there is a LOT to do.  Camping, fishing, hunting, boating, and lots more.  Arizona became a state in 1912 and our state motto is “Ditat Deus”, which means “God enriches”.  Our state flower is the saguaro blossom, and our state gem is turquoise.  Our state tree is the palo verde and it means, “green stick”.  Our state mammal is the ringtail cat, and our state reptile is the Arizona ridge-nose rattlesnake.  We hope you enjoyed learning about Arizona, and we look forward to learning about your state too.  Happy trails from Ms. Lowe’s Fifth Graders!

Dear Class,
We are second graders at San Cayetano Elementary School in Rio Rico.  We have 760 students in preschool through 5th grade.  We live in the desert.  There are many saguaro and other cactus.  There are jackrabbits, mountain lions, rattlesnakes, scorpions, spiders, tarantulas, javalinas, roadrunners, coyotes, and tortoises.  It is hot and dry because it doesn’t rain very much.  The canyons have some small waterfalls.  Our big cities are Tucson and Phoenix.  We hope you visit the desert one day.  Mrs. Hayes’ Second Grade Team
