| We are in Mrs. Steele’s first
grade class at Adams School. Our school has 500 students in grades K
– 5. There are 13 boys and 8 girls in our class. We love to read
and listen to stories. So far this year our class has read over 2,500
books! We are currently learning about the North and South Poles, Eskimos,
and polar animals. Question: Why do polar bears never eat penguins?
Answer: Polar bears live near the North Pole and penguins only live south
of the equator! Michigan is called the “Mitten State,” because the lower peninsula is shaped like a mitten. Midland is located near the thumb of the mitten. The Dow Chemical and Dow Corning Companies are headquartered here. Dow Chemicals is one of the world’s largest chemical companies. Dow Corning is a leading manufacturer of computer chips that run your computers and cell phones. Midland is noted for our “Tridge” a unique three-legged pedestrian bridge that spans the junction of two rivers. |
| Hello from the UP! That
is Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We are up north by Lake Superior (17
miles west of Marquette). The Mackinac Bridge connects us to lower MI.
There is fishing, hunting, mining, and lumbering up here. There is
a lot of snow (185” average)! Our school is PreK to grade 8. We are two classes of Kindergarten: 14 boys and 10 girls in the morning, 14 boys and 11 girls in the afternoon. We like journals, workstations, songs, and playing outside. We like to sled, ski, snowboard, build snowmen, and play in the snow! | Hello from Kurtz Elementary
School in Milford, Michigan. We are two kindergarten classes with the
same teacher. Our “A” group goes to school all day on Monday, Thursday,
and alternate Wednesdays. Our “B” group goes to school all day on Tuesday,
Friday, and alternate Wednesdays. Our “A” group has 22 students – 9
girls and 13 boys. Our “B” group has 21 students – 10 girls and 11 boys.
Milford is located about 40 miles NW of Detroit, the largest city in our
state. Some facts about Michigan: We are two peninsulas.
The Lower Peninsula looks like a hand. We call the Upper Peninsula the
UP. The Lower Peninsula and UP are connected by the Mackinac Bridge.
Michigan is the only state that touches 4 of the 5 Great Lakes – Huron, Ontario,
Michigan, Erie, Superior (What do the first letters spell?) Our state capital – Lansing Our State Bird – Robin Our State Flower – Apple Blossom Ms. Klein’s kindergarten classes hope you enjoyed learning about Michigan. |
| Hello Classroom! Our school is in Nashville, Michigan. It is a small rural town that is between Lansing, our state capital, and Battle Creek where they make many brands of cereals. All around our town are farms. We are fans of the Detroit Tigers, the Detroit Lions, and the Detroit Red Wings hockey team. The leaves on the trees are now changing and are beginning to fall to the ground. It is also getting colder at night which means that soon it will be snowing. We look forward to getting your postcard. Mrs. Wilde’s 2nd Grade Class |
| Dear Neighbor, We are in third grade at Huron Academy in Sterling Heights. There are 69 kids in the third grade, divided up into three classes. We wear uniforms at our charter school, except when we have jean day. We have school from 8:15 to 3:10. We get 50 minutes for lunch and recess and 45 minutes for enrichment class each day. We have Art, Music, Spanish, Computers, and PE once a week. Lansing is the capital of Michigan. It’s about an hour northwest of us. Jennifer Granholm is the governor of our state, at least until the next election. Here are a couple unique facts about our state. First, we have 2 peninsulas in our state. The lower peninsula looks like a mitten. Second, four of the five Great Lakes border Michigan. The only one that doesn’t border us is Lake Ontario. All of the lakes names put together spell the word HOMES! Finally, Canada is east of us as well as north of us. That makes our geography lessons a little confusing, but kind of fun! If you’re ever in Michigan, you should visit Port Huron, Traverse City (especially during the Cherry Festival in July), Mackinaw Island, Metro Beach, Stoney Creek Park, Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, Greek Town in Detroit, Michigan Adventure, and the State Fair. There are many fun and exciting things to do here! Sincerely, Your friends in Miss Bergstrom, Mrs. Lane, and Mrs. Zurawski’s class |
