MONTANA

Hello from Montana!
Montana is the 4th largest state in the US.  It is called the “Big Sky State” and the “Treasure State” (gold, silver, & copper, farmland, oil).  Our school is by Pompeys Pillar National Monument which is along the Lewis and Clark Trail.  Clark stopped there on the return trip from the Pacific Ocean and inscribed his name and date on “The Rock”.  He dedicated it to Sacagawea’s son, Pomp.  General Custer had his final battle (at the Little Bighorn) just south of us.  Many dinosaur fossils have been found in MT; Miasaura (good mother lizard) is our state dinosaur.  Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks are in Montana too.  We have 25 students in our 3rd grade class (10 girls & 15 boys).
Sincerely, Mrs. Williams’ 3rd Grade Class

Dear students,
I am 8 years old.  I am in 3rd grade.  How many kids are there in your grades?  There are 2 2nd graders in our class and 2 1st graders.  One 7th, 6th, and 4th grade.

Dear Class,
We are 4th graders at Hysham Elementary School.  Our class has 16 students.  Hysham is a small community with around 300 people.  We live 70 miles from Billings, Montana’s largest city.  Most of the people here farm grains, corn, and beets.  They also raise cattle.  Hysham is located along the Yellowstone River.  Lewis and Clark traveled along this river on their way to the Pacific Ocean.  Not far from where we live is Pompey’s Pillar, where William Clark signed his name.  For recreation people enjoy hunting and fishing.  We have a beautiful state.  In eastern Montana there are hills and plains.  Western Montana has mountains and streams.  It’s a great place to live!
Sincerely,
Miss Jensen’s Class
