SIXTH GRADE
Mrs. Stehura

Dear Parents,

I look forward to an exciting year.  I will be sending parent letters home from time to time to keep you informed of events in our classroom as well as reports of the progress of your child.  If there is something of special concern to you about your child, please, let me know.   I cannot help if I am not aware of problems.  Your involvement and support mean a great deal to your child and his/her success.  Following is some general information about our classroom.
                                                                                              Sincerely,

                                                                                              Mrs. Stehura

Homework

I believe homework is important because it is a valuable aid in helping students reinforce what has been learned in class, teaches responsibility, helps students develop positive study habits, and keeps parents informed about current studies at school.  I assign homework Monday through Thursday nights.  Students will have math homework every night as well as one or two other subjects.  All other assignments are due in class.  Homework should take no longer than an hour to complete.  If it continually does please let me know.  Spelling and math tests are on Friday with math fact tests given throughout the week.
I expect students to do their best job on their homework.  I expect homework to be neat, not sloppy.  I expect students to do the work on their own and ask for help only after they have given it their best effort.
If students choose not to do their homework, I will ask that parents begin checking and signing completed homework each night.  If students still choose not to complete their homework, they also choose to lose certain privileges and I will telephone home.  If students choose to make up homework the next day, their homework will be accepted but they will receive a one-grade reduction on that assignment.  If they choose not to make up assignments, students will receive a zero for that assignment.  If students choose not to turn in a third assignment, the student will receive a detention.  Students who turn in all assignments on time earn a free homework pass.
We will continue to switch for science and social studies as in the past.  If you have questions about science assignments, please contact Mrs. Bowser.
All assignments will be written in the student planner.  Parents need to initial the calendar everyday.  Please be aware that I initial the planner to indicate that the assignments have been recorded from the board.  It does not signify completed work!  Please use the planner as a means of communication between home and school.
Parents are the key to making homework a positive experience.  Please help your child make homework a top priority by providing a quiet work environment, setting a daily homework time, providing praise and support, and contacting me if you notice a problem.
Please discuss this homework policy with your child.  Then sign and return the bottom portion of this letter to school.  Together we can make this year the best yet!

 Textbooks

Please be aware that we have three  textbooks that are only three years old: math, reading, and science.  The Saxon math is a cumulative series, which continually reviews and builds on basic skills.  For this reason, students must know their basic math facts. The reading book also includes grammar and spelling.  Students do not have an English book or a Spelling book.  All spelling words, vocabulary words, and grammar and reading skills are in the students’ reading workbook.  Please be sure that all books are covered and taken care of well.

  Parties

We have three parties during the year.  The students choose one party to sign up for to bring in treats.  I will send home a slip with the students to notify you of the party and the treat.  If there is a problem with the selection, please indicate that on the form and we will work something else out.  Birthday treats are welcome anytime; however, due to our schedule it would be best not to send any on Fridays.  If students are passing out birthday invitations, please be sure there is an invitation for all the children (every one of the same gender or the entire class).  Otherwise, please mail the invitations to avoid any hurt feelings.
