GENEVA JUNIOR HIGH NEWS
August/September 2007
The junior high staff and I are looking forward
to meeting the incoming seventh grade class of students. Hopefully
this small newsletter will provide students and parents with information
that will make the transition to the junior high easier. This
may be a sad time for the students who are leaving the elementary
schools where many have attended the past seven years, leaving behind
younger friends and the teachers. But hopefully, it is also an exciting
time for the students who will be meeting new friends from all the different
elementary schools in the area. They will be changing classes every 42
minutes and have the opportunity to learn from a great staff of experienced
and caring educators. We are certain that the majority of students
will enjoy their new educational and social environment. We will
be seeing you soon!
Items of Interest For Incoming
Seventh Grade Students and Parents
Assignment Books
We will be into our eighth year of using the
assignment book at Geneva Junior High. All students are issued
an assignment book and must carry it with them throughout the school
day and school year. The assignment book has many purposes with
the most important one being an organizational planner for your child.
It will also be used as a communication tool between the school and
home. Additionally, the assignment book will be used to record
detentions, in-school suspensions, and out-of-school suspensions.
Parents should check the assignment books nightly and verify that assignments
written down are completed.
Assignment books are to be treated as textbooks and are not to be folded or have pages ripped from them. Students will be responsible for the cost of replacement when necessary. Teachers Will: Write or post assignments, initial comments from parents when shown by students, write comments to parents that should be initialed by the parents and use assignment book to record detentions. Students Must: Carry assignment book to every class, record all assignments as written, show their parents comments from teachers, show parent comments to teachers, and use assignment book as a hall pass. There will be consequences for failing to do the above actions. Students Should: Take assignment book home nightly for parents to review and record test, quiz and homework grades. Parents Should: Insist that assignment book be brought home each evening and check for notes, grades, etc. Make sure that written assignments are completed. Write notes to teachers in assignment books to communicate concerns with the teachers and initial comments from teachers. If teachers are not responding to your notes, please email Mr. Belconis at richard.belconis@neomin.org Many of the teachers email accounts are posted on the district website that is posted on the front of this newsletter. If you can not contact a teacher, contact Mr. Belconis. REQUESTS
All students at Geneva Junior High will sit in on an information and discipline orientation presentation within the first two weeks of school. Each student will receive a copy of the Geneva Junior High School Conduct Code, Internet Acceptable Use Policy and Agreement, and an Information/Discipline Orientation Packet. Some of the information that will be shared with the students is listed below: 1. If being driven to school or walking, students need to arrive before 7:35 a.m. Students riding on busses are held on the bus until 7:20. All students on the property must enter the building at that time. When students get off busses or are dropped off by parents, they are to report to the gym/cafeteria where they are held until 7:30 a.m. 2. Once on school property, students must remain on school property. 3. Wildly colored hair that draws attention away from instruction, sleeveless shirts, shirts and blouses that do not cover the skin between shirts and pants, shorts that are shorter than finger tips extended, pajamas, hats, and outer wear will not be permitted in the building. Shirt sleeves must be on the top and bottom. If underarms are exposed, please do not allow the student to wear the shirt to school. Outer wear may be allowed if heating in an area becomes an issue. 4. Students may only be tardy to school five times a semester, excused or unexcused. If a student exceeds that number, detentions and in-school suspension time are issued. Students who are tardy to an individual class more than two times for a year will face disciplinary action. 5. If a student is absent, we ask parents to call in between 7:00 and 8:15 a.m. if possible. Even if a parent has called a note must accompany a student on return to school. 6. If a student is signing out, that information is to be presented to the office prior to 7:40 a.m. Parents must pick students up in the office and sign them out in person. 7. Fighting will not be tolerated. Both participants will be suspended in almost all cases except for possible knee-jerk reactions to an attack. 8. Theft will not be tolerated. Violators will be suspended and a court citation will be filed. 9. If a student is being threatened with assault or a weapon is suspected or known to have come to school an adult in the building should be notified immediately. 10. Students who get involved in horseplay that involves sexual misconduct such as the touching or pulling down of apparel will be suspended. 11. Harassment will not be tolerated. 12. Cell phones must be off between 7:20 a.m. and 2:20 p.m. I Pods, MP3 Players, other electronic devices and toys are not to be visible or used during the school day except for when used for educational activities required by a teacher. 13. Tobacco related incidents result in a 3 day out of school suspension and require a court citation or participation in the Geneva Police Department stop smoking class. 14. Alcohol, illegal drugs and/or prescription medications brought to school or given to other students results in police involvement, a 10 day out of school suspension, and a citation to juvenile court. Parents are advised to keep a close watch over their prescription medications. We have had too many incidents where student are sharing their medications or parents medications with other students. If you have any questions regarding the above items, please call or email Mr. Belconis. FALL SPORTS STARTING DATES & CAMPS
