GENEVA JUNIOR HIGH NEWS
Feb./March 2008
State Of Our School
One of the goals of Geneva Junior High School is for all students
to achieve at a “B” level. We have fallen well short of that goal,
but we are pleased with the outstanding efforts of several of our students.
Forty-six seventh grade students were on the Honor Roll. Fifty-six
seventh grade students were on the Merit Roll. In the eighth grade, 54 students
were on the Honor Roll and 54 were on the Merit Roll. That represents
49% of our student population that have achieved at “B” or better.
That is an 11% increase from a year ago! We would like to continue to improve
on that percentage next nine weeks. The students as a whole are
not performing to their capabilities and are not meeting the expectations
of the teachers. We Need To Do Better! We did have 21% of our students who worked to improve their grades the second nine weeks. We are especially pleased with the effort of the eighth grade students. Students who improve at least one grade while maintaining all other subject grades, and students who improved in more than one without letting more than one fall are recognized on the B.U.G. Club. There were 59 eighth grade students and 30 seventh grade students who accomplished this feat. The 21% is also a slight increase from last year’s percentage of students who improved. We would like to see a dramatic increase in the number of students who improve next nine weeks, especially in the seventh grade. The students need to become more responsible for their homework and study for quizzes and tests. We had several students who did not earn a 1.5 G.P.A. that is necessary to participate in athletics. Forty-one seventh grade students and 19 eighth grade students were ineligible. That represents 14 percent of our student population. The teachers and administration are very concerned that the lack of effort we are seeing in the classroom on a daily basis will not yield the results that are necessary for Geneva Junior High to get passing marks on our State Report Card. It also means that many of our students are not preparing themselves to pass the High School Graduation Tests. We are working hard to improve on these marks, but we need your help. Please encourage your child to complete homework and to study for tests ahead of the scheduled test dates. Insist that you see their math homework and that science and history books are brought home and studied each week. Together, we can make a difference. Outstanding Performance!
Thirty-nine students received perfect marks for the second nine
week grading period. These students will be given a Subway sub and
pop luncheon for their outstanding achievements. We applaud the efforts
of these fine students.
Upcoming Events!
Practice,
Practice, Practice!
That’s what we have been doing since the beginning of the year!
We have been preparing our students for this year’s State of Ohio Achievement
Tests. To help improve our scores, the school district is participating
in the Discovery Education Think Link Assessment Program in our reading and
math areas. Think Link Assessments are helping our teachers identify
weaknesses in their instruction as well as weaknesses of individual students.
We have given our students a pre-assessment in September that showed
their weaknesses when entering the junior high and followed up with another
assessment in December that indicated where they are falling behind as of
that assessment. Students are identified as being Advanced, Proficient,
Basic or Limited. We are striving to get all our students to the proficient
level. The September assessment indicated that 86.4% of our seventh
grade reading students and 90% of our seventh grade math students were proficient.
The December assessment showed that 92.3% of our reading and 86% of our math
students were on track. For the eighth grade, 91% of our reading and
85.2% of our math students were meeting the mark entering the grade.
In December, the scores showed that 89.5 % of reading students and 85.7%
of math students were proficient. Based on that information and other
data, we are doing what we can to intervene with students who are not meeting
the benchmarks. On February 14th and 15th we will be assessing the
students again utilizing the Think Link Assessments and other assessment
tools for writing in the seventh grade and social studies and science in
grade 8 to help us determine what needs to be done to close the achievement
gaps before the end of April testing. We, who are in the business of
educating your children, are in an age of accountability. We recognize
the need for us to make sure students know what they need to know according
to the State of Ohio. We need your help in making sure your child is
completing all work for their classes so that they will be prepared for the
achievement tests and for their future career choices. I would encourage
all parents whose children have been identified as basic or limited to attend
the parent conferences at the end of February.Students of the Month— November/December Emily O’Dell was selected as our November student of the month for grade 7. The eighth grade student of the month for November was Lindsey Adams. December We had two students selected from each class for December’s Students of the Month. Clare Carlisle and Natalie Thomas were selected as the seventh grade recipients. Jennifer Bean and Laurisa Rosado were chosen for the eighth grade. We are very thankful for these students who constantly display a sense of responsibility and show respect for their teachers, students, and staff on a daily basis. |
