About Our Newsletters
The purpose of our newsletters will be to keep you informed
about the events and activities that your child may be involved or interested
in at GJHS. If you have any questions concerning your child’s education
at Geneva Junior High School, please call us at 466-4831
. If you wish to come in to see the guidance counselor or principal,
please call in advance to make sure they will be able to meet with you.
It is not necessary to make an appointment, but other activities may prohibit
them from seeing you if you just drop in off of the street. If you are
coming to the school, you can park in one of the six visitor parking spots
that are in the north parking lot off of Sherman Street. When you
come to the doors, you will be buzzed in at the door. Upon entering,
we ask you to sign in at the counter if you are staying for a meeting with
one of the staff. We keep all doors locked for the safety of our students.
We hope to keep the lines of communication open and hope you
will feel comfortable contacting our office. Please leave a voice
mail if no one is in the office to answer the phone at the time of your
call. Someone will get to you as soon as possible to provide answers
to your questions or address a problem that you may have at the time.
Our office hours are from 6:45 a.m. thru 3:15 p.m. daily. A list of

Vocational School Visit
For Eighth Grade Students
Your eighth grade student will be bringing
home a permission slip to visit the Ashtabula County Joint Vocational
School on Tuesday, October 4. Our students
will have the opportunity to take part in a two hour visit where they
will investigate programs and will hear from students about the vocational
experiences and benefits of their programs. This visit is the kick
off for the intensive career studies which is done in the eighth grade
with the development of the Individual Career Plan (ICP) and continues
throughout their remaining years culminating in the development of the
Career Passport which the students will receive with their diplomas.
A more detailed description of the eighth grade career activities and
the “It’s About Time” parent brochure
will be sent home soon with your eighth grade student.
Dances!
The first junior high dance of the year
is scheduled to be held in the junior high cafeteria/gym on
Friday, October 19. The dance will cost students
$5.00 and will start immediately after school and will end at
4:30. Please make arrangements to pick the students up at the conclusion
of the dance.
For our dances, parents will need to sign a permission slip for their
child to purchase a ticket and to attend the dance. Please arrive
before 4:30 in the back parking lot to pick the students up.
Parents are welcome to chaperone and come into the dance at any time.
Students who are suspended out of school or who have served C.S.C.
are not allowed to attend the dance. They will be allowed to attend
the following dance if there is no suspension between now and the second
dance.
The final dance of the year is a dress
up dance. It is not a formal. Please, do not go out and buy
gowns for the end of the year eighth grade dance.
October Attendance Audit
It is very important that students try to attend school
every day the week of October 1 – October 5.
It is the week that the state of Ohio uses to determine average daily membership
for all the school districts in the state. The attendance for the
week determines the amount of money that is collected for the district based
on the per student formula.
We realize students will be out of school during the week for illness
and other valid reasons. Please help us by following the established
attendance procedures. Please make sure a note is brought in for any student
absence, tardy, or early dismissal. We appreciate your cooperation.
Safety Concerns
The need to maintain a safe school environment for our
students has been and will continue to be very important to us. We
would like to inform parents that we do have video equipment that scans many
of our hallways, parking lots and entrances. Our Resource Officer is
in and out of the building on a regular basis and teachers are asked to notify
the office of unauthorized visitors in the building. There are emergency
phones in all rooms and a lockdown policy in place. All doors are locked
during the day. Please sign in at the office
before continuing to any area in the junior high area.
School Pictures
School pictures will be taken by Rapid Photo on
Thursday, September 13. All students need to get a picture
taken for records. Packets will be sent home with all students.
Parents wishing to purchase the pictures need to have their child bring the
packet in with the money on the day of the pictures.

State Standards
Students have more success in school when they understand
what they are expected to learn. Ohio’s Academic Standards are clear
statements describing the knowledge and skills students should know and
be able to do from kindergarten through high school graduation.
The junior high staff is making certain that your child will know what
they need to know for the state achievement and graduation tests.
This year our seventh grade students will be taking achievement tests in
the writing, math, and reading areas in May. Eighth grade students
will be tested in reading, math, science, and social studies. These
tests will help us to identify students who may have difficulty passing
the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) that will be taken in the spring of their
tenth grade year.
Students and parents must understand that the student is responsible
for learning the material that is presented in their classes.
To help you know more about what your child should know, be able to
understand and do, visit the www.acesc.k12.oh.us
website and explore the areas within the site. Recommended areas
are the Ohio Department of Education’s Standards Guides
for Families, Instructional Management System, and Ohio’s Statewide Test
Site. There are other areas within the site that also contain
much useful information for you and your child.
The one area where students fall behind in the junior high school is
in the area of completing assigned homework. Please check the assignment
book frequently to see if there is communication from the teacher regarding
missing assignments. Math teachers in the junior high school
will give homework each day. In science and in history students should be
bringing home their books to read the chapters and reviewing the day’s instruction
so that they can adequately prepare for the tests.
We are also working on some other methods to improve our communication
with you.
This will improve their chances for success!
Eligibility Rules
Eligibility to participate in athletics and extra-curricular
activities is determined each nine- week grading period. To be eligible
to participate in athletics, a student must be passing 75% of the courses
they are taking and must have a 1.5 G.P.A. for the
preceding grading period.
If your child is planning to participate in a winter sport and did not
get a physical for a fall sport, you should pick up a physical form and
make an appointment for a physical. This should be done before the
end of October so that your child is able to participate in the try-outs.
Due to the number of students that try out for boys’ and girls’ basketball,
it is necessary to limit the number on the team. The number
of students on a team is decided by the coaches. Missing the try-outs
due to not having a physical greatly reduces a student’s chance of making
the team.
Try-outs for boys basketball will begin in November. Girls basketball
try-outs will be in the beginning of December.
Progress Reports
The first progress reports of the year should be in your
mailboxes by October 5. If your child received
one or more, it indicates that some immediate attention needs to be given
so that your child does not fail a subject the first nine week grading period.
The end of this nine week grading period is Friday, November 2 and report
cards will be sent home with the students on Friday, November 9.
Calendar Correction
Januaray 17th is the end of the first semester. January
18th is records day. There is no school that day for students.
This was printed wrong on the district calendar.

REQUESTS
All students at Geneva Junior High
have had the opportunity to sit in on an information and discipline orientation
presentation. Each student received a copy of the
Geneva Junior High/Senior High School Conduct Code, Internet Acceptable
Use Policy and Agreement. Students were asked to share these
informational packets with their parents or guardians.
Some of the information that was to be shared with parents is listed below:
1. Students need to arrive before 7:30 a.m. They
are to enter the building at the glass enclosure if walking or being dropped
off by a parent. If riding a bus they will come to the back gym/cafeteria
doors.
2. Once on school property, they must remain on school
property.
3. Wildly colored hair that draws attention away from
instruction, sleeveless shirts, shorts that are shorter than finger tips extended,
pajamas, hats and outer wear will not be permitted in building. Outer
wear may be allowed if heating in an area becomes an issue.
4. Students who are tardy to an individual class more
than two times for a year will face disciplinary action.
5. If a student is absent, we ask parents to call in
between 6:30 and 8:15 a.m. if possible. Even if a parent has called
a note must accompany a student on return
to school.
6. If a student is signing out, that information is to be presented
to the office prior to 7:40 a.m. Parents must
pick students up in the office.
7. Fighting will not be tolerated. Both participants
will be suspended in almost all cases except for possible knee-jerk reactions
to an attack.
8. Theft will not be tolerated. Violators will
be suspended and a court citation will be filed.
9. If a weapon is suspected or known to have come to school
an adult in the building should be notified immediately. Students who
report violations of the Student Conduct Code will have their name withheld
during any inquiry of another accused student. This is a right in
the administrative process and legally documented.
10. Students possessing or using tobacco, alcoholic products, street
drugs or prescription medicines and/or over the counter or look-a-like drugs
will be suspended and face court action.
11. Harassment will not be tolerated.
Your child was asked to review these items with you. If you have
any questions regarding the above, please call.
Assignment Books
We are in our eighth year of using the assignment book at Geneva
Junior High. All students are issued an assignment book and must carry
it with them throughout the school day and school year. The assignment
book has many purposes with the most important one being an organizational
planner for your child. It will also be used as a communication tool
between the school and home. Additionally, the assignment book will
be used to record detentions, in-school suspensions and out-of-school suspensions.
Parents should check the assignment books nightly
and verify that assignments are written down and completed.
Assignment books are to be treated as textbooks and are not to be folded
or have pages ripped from them. Students will be responsible for the
cost of replacement when necessary.
Teachers Will:
