| Dear Spencer Elementary Parents/Guardians, If you are new to our school, this letter serves as general information that will be helpful to you as you become acquainted with our procedures. If you are returning, this letter serves as a reminder of the procedures used to operate our school in a safe and efficient manner. As the year progresses and questions arise, we encourage you to call the school and talk with those who might be of help. If your question deals with in-class events, please ask to speak with the teacher. If it deals with the overall program, curriculum or activities, contact me directly. Please be aware of the following key points for a successful school year. 1. Students may not be dropped off before 8:20 AM. Classes start at 8:45 AM. Breakfast is served from 8:20-8:40 AM. In the morning, the front west drive is to be used for dropping off students. No car is to be driven on the sidewalk, or parked and left unattended in the driveway. Parents who wish to escort their children into the building must park in the west or north lot. The west driveway is for entering and exiting. The east driveway is an exit only drive. 2. When your child is going to be tardy or absent, please call to let us know by 9:00 AM. Our call-in line is 466-4831 x149. 3. It helps everyone if students understand their day before they leave for school in the morning. With over 400 students at Spencer, it can be very confusing to our office, classrooms and your children to make changes in transportation during the day. Classroom notes to teachers provide the best and safest communication for your child. Please send a note to your child’s teacher when normal schedules or routines are changed due to: • Change in transportation home. • Release from gym class, recess or another activity. • Change in medication. • Absence or tardiness. • Change in address, phone, living arrangements, or babysitter. 4. Students who are picked up after school will be dismissed at 3:10 PM. Bussed students will be dismissed at 3:13 PM from the first and second floors and 3:15 PM from the third floor. This ensures a safe and orderly dismissal and allows busses to depart by 3:17 PM. In the event of a last minute change requiring you to get your child off of a bus, report to the office and the school secretary will radio a bus to have the child to report to the office. Reporting directly to a bus is a violation of safe school procedures. 5. Pick up procedures – park in the north or west lot and come into the building. Do not report to your child’s classroom. Students will be waiting in the library. 6. Families who may qualify for the free lunch/breakfast program must complete required forms. When paying for lunches/breakfasts, always send money in a sealed envelope that has your child’s name, the teacher’s name and amount of money on it. Payment can be made on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. If your child forgets their money, credit will be issued for one day only. After that time, your child will be given a peanut butter bar and milk. Checks must be made payable to Spencer School Cafeteria. 7. The K-6 Student handbook is sent home with all students. Please note dress code guidelines and conduct code to be aware of behavior and clothing not appropriate for the school. 8. Safety procedures: • Do not leave a vehicle unattended in the driveway for any length of time. Use the north or west lots to park your car. • Keep the posted No Parking areas clear. Drivers may not wait in these areas to drop off or pick up students. • When dropping off a student in the morning, pull up as close to the front doors as possible and unload quickly. 9. Medications are distributed by prescription only and require and the signature of a parent and physician on a Geneva Schools Medication Form. Medications may not be transported by bus. I am aware that the above procedures are not always easy for parents, particularly in the area of student drop off and pick up. Please keep in mind that all procedures are made with safety as our first priority. The thought of being with your children for another year at Spencer is exciting. Please read our monthly school newsletter, Spencer Crier, to be informed about news and events as we move through the year. Should you have further questions or concerns, please contact me at my extension, 466-4831 x148. Sincerely, Michael R. Penzenik Principal |
