On December 9, 2003, the State Board of Education voted unanimously (16-0) to adopt new academic content standards in computer literacy, fine arts and foreign language. These conclude the remaining three of seven subject areas approved by the Board in Ohio’s effort to create an aligned system of academic standards, model curricula and tests. Also the Board approved pre-kindergarten content standards for English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. House Bill 94 required the Department to develop pre-kindergarten standards and model curricula in reading and mathematics. Recognizing the value of science and social studies as key foundational content areas, the State Board also asked ODE to develop pre-kindergarten standards and model curricula in these subject areas.
The Ohio Department of Education’s Instructional Management System (IMS) contains some of the first materials for the model curricula for English language arts and mathematics. In the future, model curricula for other content areas, as well as additional information about assessment and instruction in Ohio, will be available here. http://ims.ode.state.oh.us/ode/ims/
