Using Graphic Organizers to Aid Comprehension — Grade Two Attachment 1 Attachment 2 Attachment 3 Attachment 4 Attachment 5 Attachment 6 Attachment 7 Grade: Grade 2  Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans Description: Students will use a graphic organizer to demonstrate comprehension of informational text.  Ohio Standards Connection: Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators: Standard:  Reading Process: Concepts of Print, Comprehension Strategies and Self-Monitoring Strategies   Benchmark: A.  Establish a purpose for reading and use a range of reading comprehension strategies to understand literary passages and text.    Indicator: 5.  Create and use graphic organizers, such as Venn diagrams or webs, to demonstrate comprehension.   Benchmark: C.  Draw conclusions from information in the text.   Indicator: 4.  Summarize text by recalling main ideas and some supporting details. Secondary Standards, Benchmarks and Indicators: Standard:  Writing Process  Benchmark  C.  Use organizers to clarify ideas for writing assignments.  Indicator: 4.  Use organizational strategies (e.g., brainstorming, lists, webs and Venn diagrams) to plan writing.  Standard:  Research  Benchmark  B.  Retell important details and findings.  Indicator: 4.  Identify important information and write brief notes about the information.  Indicator: 5.  Sort relevant information into categories about the topic with teacher assistance.

Using Non-Text Features — Grade Two Attachment 1 Attachment 2 Attachment 3 Attachment 4 Grade: Grade 2  Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans Description: Students will use non-text features such as diagrams, charts, graphs or maps to obtain information about a topic.  Ohio Standards Connection: Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators: Standard:  Reading Applications: Informational, Technical and Persuasive Text   Benchmark: D.  Use visual aids as sources to gain additional information from text.   Indicator: 5.  Identify information in diagrams, charts, graphs and maps.

Generating Questions for Research — Grade Two Attachment 1 Grade: Grade 2  Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans Description: Students will generate questions for the investigation of a topic.  Ohio Standards Connection: Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators: Standard:  Research   Benchmark: A.  Generate questions for investigation and gather information from a variety of sources.   Indicator: 1.  Create questions for investigations, assigned topic or personal area of interest.  Secondary Standards, Benchmarks and Indicators: Standard:  Reading Process: Concepts of Print, Comprehension Strategies and Self-Monitoring Strategies  Benchmark  D.  Apply reading skills and strategies to summarize and compare and contrast information in text, between text and across subject areas.  Indicator: 4.  Summarize text by recalling main ideas and some supporting details.  Benchmark  E.  Demonstrate comprehension by responding to questions (e.g., literal, informational and evaluative).   Indicator: 6.  Answer literal, inferential and evaluative questions to demonstrate comprehension of grade-appropriate print texts and electronic and visual media.
