Narrative Strategies — Grade Six Attachment 1 Attachment 2 Grade: Grade 6  Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans Description: Students will understand what strategies authors use to make characters and setting seem real to readers and be able to develop characters and describe setting in original narratives.  Ohio Standards Connection: Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators: Standard:  Reading Applications: Literary Text   Benchmark: A.  Describe and analyze the elements of character development.   Indicator: 1.  Analyze the techniques authors use to describe characters, including narrator or other characters' point of view; character's own thoughts, words or actions. Standard:  Writing Applications   Benchmark: A.  Use narrative strategies (e.g., dialogue and action) to develop characters, plot and setting and to maintain a consistent point of view.   Indicator: 1.  Write narratives that maintain a clear focus and point of view and use sensory details and dialogue to develop plot, characters, and a specific setting.

Themes in Mythology — Grade Six Attachment 1 Grade: Grade 6  Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans Description: Students will read a variety of myths and determine common themes found in myths from around the world.  Ohio Standards Connection: Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators: Standard:  Reading Applications: Literary Text   Benchmark: E.  Demonstrate comprehension by inferring themes, patterns and symbols.   Indicator: 5.  Identify recurring themes, patterns and symbols found in literature from different eras and cultures.

Give Me the Facts: A Lesson for the Middle Grades — Grade Six Grade: Grade 6  Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans Description: In this lesson, students will understand the importance of a summary, when and where summaries are used and what makes an exemplary summary. Students will come away from this lesson with the ability to critically read summaries, and they also will better understand how summaries are written.  Ohio Standards Connection: Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators: Standard:  Reading Applications: Informational, Technical and Persuasive Text   Benchmark: F.  Determine the extent to which a summary accurately reflects the main idea, critical details and underlying meaning of original text.   Indicator: 4.  Compare original text to a summary to determine the extent to which the summary adequately reflects the main ideas and critical details of the original text. Secondary Standards, Benchmarks and Indicators: Standard:  Reading Process: Concepts of Print, Comprehension Strategies and Self-Monitoring Strategies  Benchmark  D.  Apply self-monitoring strategies to clarify confusion about text and to monitor comprehension.  Indicator: 7.  Monitor own comprehension by adjusting speed to fit the purpose, or by skimming, scanning, reading on, looking back, note taking or summarizing what has been read so far in text.
