Grade: Grade 9 Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans Description: Students will learn how to identify and analyze the use of figurative language used in selected poems, short stories or other pieces of prose chosen by the teacher. These pieces of literature will represent at least two pieces by one writer and at least two pieces by different writers. Students will also learn to identify similar recurring themes across the different works and analyze the universality of the themes. Students will demonstrate, through their writing, their ability to document textual evidence which justifies their interpretation of the literary selections. Ohio Standards Connection: Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators: Standard: Reading Applications: Literary Text Benchmark: D. Identify similar recurring themes across different works. Indicator: 5. Identify and explain universal themes across different works by the same author and by different authors. Benchmark: F. Identify and analyze how an author uses figurative language, sound devices and literary techniques to shape plot, set meaning and develop tone. Indicator: 9. Analyze ways in which the author conveys mood and tone through word choice, figurative language and syntax. Benchmark: G. Explain techniques used by authors to develop style. Indicator: 10. Explain how authors use symbols to create broader meanings. Secondary Standards, Benchmarks and Indicators: Standard: Writing Applications Benchmark B. Write responses to literature that extend beyond the summary and support references to the text, other works, other authors or to personal knowledge. Indicator: 2. Write responses to literature that organize an insightful interpretation around several clear ideas, premises or images and support judgments with specific references to the original text, to other texts, authors and to prior knowledge. |

Grade: Grade 9 Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans Description: Students will learn to describe the features of rhetorical devices usedin public documents such as speeches or newspaper articles. They also will learn to identify appeals to authority, reason and emotion. Students willanalyze an author's implicit and explicit viewpoint. Ohio Standards Connection: Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators: Standard: Reading Applications: Informational, Technical and Persuasive Text Benchmark: B. Identify examples of rhetorical devices and valid and invalid inferences, and explain how authors use these devices to achieve their purposes and reach their intended audiences. Indicator: 8. Identify the features of rhetorical devices used in common types of public documents, including newspaper editorials and speeches. Benchmark: D. Explain and analyze how an author appeals to an audience and develops an argument or viewpoint in text. Indicator: 5. Analyze an author's implicit and explicit argument, perspective or viewpoint in text. |

Grade: Grade 9 Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans Description: Students will correctly use quotation marks, colons and semicolons in a variety of writing situations; they also will identify and use parallel structure correctly. Ohio Standards Connection: Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators: Standard: Writing Conventions Benchmark: B. Use correct punctuation and capitalization. Indicator: 2. Use correct punctuation and capitalization. Benchmark: C. Demonstrate understanding of the grammatical conventions of the English language. Indicator: 3. Use clauses (e.g., main, subordinate) and phrases (e.g., gerund, infinitive, participial). Indicator: 4. Use parallel structure to present items in a series and items juxtaposed for emphasis. |
